How the Lana del Rey advert looked painted on a wall in Stucley Place

A STREET artist said he was sent death threats and incessant abuse on social media from Lana Del Rey fans after painting over an advert for the alt-pop singer’s new album.

A wall owned by a tattoo parlour in Stucley Place, Camden Town, is an established revolving door for street art, swinging from an Amy Winehouse mural to painted adverts of multinational companies. Use of the wall is typically agreed with the landlord and is often managed by agencies, such as Global Street Art.

Street artist Mr Zero painted over an ad for the singer’s new album, Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, “with permission from the owner of the building” a few weeks ago.

But he received backlash from Lana “fans” after he posted a video of him painting on social media.

Mr Zero’s new work

Someone tweeted the video saying “Lana Del Rey’s Mural in Camden Town was completely vandalized”, which has been viewed 410,500 times. In a statement on his Instagram, Mr Zero posted multiple screenshots of people telling him they “hope he dies” for painting over Lana.

Mr Zero said: “Transiency is in the nature of graffiti and street art; thus my work will soon be replaced by somebody else’s naturally. This is something unavoidable that graffiti artists have all accepted and the public must get used to this aspect of art that’s being produced in the streets.

“The Lana Del Rey mural was an ordered piece of advertisement… for which they rented the surface for a limited period of time, that has long passed since. “I can no longer tolerate the inexplicable number of harassing comments, messages and threats I receive.

“Please stop attacking photographers, galleries, other artists etc around me. I might be a boomer but I think there is a big difference between paint over paint and sending hateful messages to real people.”

Mr Zero has not responded to requests for comment.
