VIKTOR Gyokeres has warned he’s “hungry” for more goals ahead of Crystal Palace’s Premier League trip to Ashburton Grove this Sunday.
The powerhouse has won plenty of plaudits for his “phenomenal” start to life in north London following his £64m summer switch from Sporting.
He’s bullied defenders, held up the ball with commanding authority, and created plenty of space for his new teammates since arriving at the Emirates Stadium.
The one thing that has been missing from his all-action displays of late has been goals. Having hit three in his first four games for the Gunners, a barren run of seven matches without finding the back of the net had piled the pressure on the Sweden international.
But his persistence paid off on Tuesday night when Gyokeres scored a deadly double against Atletico Madrid to help guide Arsenal to a thumping 4-0 victory in the Champions League.
“It’s always amazing to score goals, and to do it here in this competition, it’s a great feeling,” said a relieved-looking Gyokeres after the game.
“I’m more hungry now. You always want to contribute with workrate and other stuff, but when you score goals as well, it’s a bit special. So that’s something I always wanted to do.”
The end of the drought seemed to mean just as much to all the other Arsenal players on the pitch, who encouraged Gyokeres to soak up the adulation of the home crowd.
Reflecting on the support of his teammates, the 27-year-old said: “It means a lot, they’re amazing. I think the group we have, and the spirit, is something different and something very special.”
Gyokeres also has a big fan in Mikel Arteta, who insisted the striker makes Arsenal “a much better team” – with or without his goals.
The Gunners boss said: “I’m so happy for him, because if there is a player that deserves credit and a big smile on his face, I think that’s him. What he brings to the team is phenomenal.
“He makes us a much better team. I think we’ve become much more unpredictable. He’s so physical, he opens spaces for everybody, the way he presses the ball, holds the ball – he’s just phenomenal.
“And then there’s icing on the cake, and the biggest thing that we’re going to debate about him is goals. He has scored two very different ones tonight, and hopefully he starts to get some momentum and a good run of goals.”
Arteta made two changes to his starting line-up against Atletico, with Myles Lewis-Skelly and Gabriel Martinelli marking their recall by combining for Arsenal’s second goal.
Getting on the scoresheet might just be enough for Martinelli to keep his place against Crystal Palace, but Lewis-Skelly is expected to be replaced by Riccardo Calafiori despite unlocking the Atletico defence with a mazy, marauding run.
Such selection dilemmas come with having a competitive squad, and Arteta wouldn’t have it any other way.
He said: “This is what we need, and when you look at the top teams in Europe, that’s what they have.
“We have to manage that in a really cohesive system, when everybody understands that they’re going to have different roles throughout the game, or in different games.
“But in the end, the outcome is to earn the right to win games. That’s the ultimate goal, and we are all seeking the same thing.”
