EMIRATES CUP 2015
ARSENAL 6, LYON 0
IF Arsenal do need to add another attacking option to their squad, then someone has clearly forgotten to tell the players as they lashed Lyon today (Saturday) in the Emirates Cup.
The Gunners boasted six different goalscorers as they continued their preparations for the new season with an emphatic 6-0 rout against the Ligue 1 runners up at the Emirates Stadium.
But Arsene Wenger was guarded when asked if the scoreline sent out a warning to his Premier League rivals. "Let's be cautious. It is a good basis of course, but let's not get carried away," said the Arsenal boss.
"Our target is to do better than last season, but it will be very difficult to win the Premier League.
"It is a good, well-balanced squad though," admitted the Frenchman, who watched his side tear into Lyon with four goals in a nine first half minutes.
Olivier Giroud's looping header gave Arsenal the lead on 29 minutes.
A cut-throat counter-attack led to the second in the 34th minute, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain running onto an Aaron Ramsey through ball and drilling the ball home from close range.
Ramsey was on hand again 90 seconds later as he set up former England youth international Alex Iwobi, whose first time left-foot shoot made it 3-0.
Ramsey capped an imperious first half display with the Gunner's fourth, latching onto a clever pass from Mesut Ozil on 39 minutes and beating the keeper at his near post.
In the second half Arsenal eased off the gas a little knowing the job was done, but still managed to add to their tally thanks to goals from Ozil and Santi Cazorla.
Wenger, of course, made a raft of substitutions, handing 17 year old Jeff Reine-Adelaide his debut. The highly-rated French youngster, who was signed from Lens in May, came on for Oxlade Chamberlain.
Out of the six goals, Wenger seemed most delighted by the one scored by Ozil. "We had a good dynamic," said Wenger. "Ozil has won over the fans.
"We are feeling their reaction to him, he has their support."
Wenger added that he was "open-minded" to the possibility of making more additions, but was more focused on keeping his current crop focused and united.
He said: "We are not in a desperate need. People say 'how do you keep players happy? Then they say 'why don't you buy more players? It's a tough balance."
Earlier in the afternoon former Gunner, Nicklas Bendtner, received a warm welcome from the home fans when he came on as a second half substitute for Wolfsburg. But the Great Dane couldn't inspire his side, who went down 2-1 to Villarreal.
