ARSENAL’S next stop in their run of London derbies is the biggest one yet when it comes to bragging rights as they prepare to welcome Tottenham to the Emirates tomorrow (Saturday) in the Women’s Super League.
The Gunners’ attacking prowess has certainly kicked up a gear since the two sides met in the reverse fixture at Brisbane Road back in November when an entertaining encounter ended goalless.
This time around the showdown against Spurs will mark Arsenal’s fourth in a run of five consecutive capital clashes. And so far their record makes for pretty good reading as the Gunners have scored 10 goals while only conceding once.
Arguably the most important of the wins so far came on Tuesday night when Renée Slegers’ side put themselves in a commanding position in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 3-1 first leg victory over Chelsea.
Goals from Stina Blackstenius, Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo did the damage as the holders put themselves in the driving seat in their attempt to defend their European crown.
Reflecting on the result ahead of Wednesday night’s second leg at Stamford Bridge, Slegers said: “It was a very tight game, two good teams going against each other.
“Chelsea created some opportunities early in the game. We stayed in the game, we were calm. It was constantly finding solutions to create spaces, to find ways out, to solve the press. So there were a lot of decisions being made and a lot of changes in what we wanted to do.
“And that, in combination with very high intensity and a lot of duels and very tight spaces on the pitch, it was a very demanding game for the players.
“Of course, I’m very happy with how we were task-focused and were composed in all moments and stayed in control.
“The players felt in control the whole game and we were ruthless with our chances. So it’s really positive. We wanted this, this is mission completed.
“We wanted to start well this first leg at the Emirates with the help of our fans, so I’m really happy with that. But now it’s half-time.”
Arsenal will turn their attention back to the domestic scene this weekend, and to beating Tottenham as they bid to stretch their unbeaten run in all competitions to 11 games. The home crowd would love another performance like the one the Gunners delivered on Saturday, when two goals from Kelly, along with goals from Blackstenius, Russo and Beth Mead, saw Arsenal thump West Ham 5-0.
