LIVERPOOL 2 ( Salah 42, Firmino 87 Salah missed penalty 52)
ARSENAL 2 (Martinelli 8, Gabriel Jesus 28)
AARON Ramsdale saved Arsenal with two astonishing saves in injury time at Anfield today (Easter Sunday) as the Gunners went from bossing this match with a two-goal advantage to almost losing to Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s underperforming side drew out the home ground roar and left Arsenal gasping for a breath – a scenario which hardly seemed likely during a first half which the the league leaders dominated and might have scored more than just two.
Gabriel Martinelli had rolled in the first goal inside nine minutes before Gabriel Jesus doubled the lead with a free header. Arsenal were in the rare position of being in cruise control away at Liverpool.
But the sleepy crowd suddenly burst into life after a square-up between Granit Xhaka and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the corner of the pitch in which both players were booked. Heads together, the fans were suddenly boiling with outrage.
Minutes later, the gusts had brought the ball into back of the Arsenal net as Mohammed Salah pulled one back just before half-time.
And this set up a second half in which the team in red bombarded the Gunners goal. Salah steered a penalty wide of the goal, while Ramsdale saved at Darwin Nunez’s feet. He also saved well from a bending Salah shot.
Arsenal had a couple of chances to seal the win but perhaps the best one fell late on to defender Gabriel who headed a corner at Allison in goal.
The equaliser finally came on 87 minutes when Roberto Firminho headed in Alexander’s cross – his eleventh career goal against Arsenal.
In injury time, however, the draw should have been turned into a win for Klopp’s men. First Ramsdale stretched brilliantly to push away a shot from Salah which had been deflected towards the top corner. Then, the keeper dived dramatically to block Konate with the goal gaping.
Arsenal themselves might have scored as well in the frenzy but Martinelli could not feel Buyako Saka on the break, when the Gunners had men over.
Ramsdale was asked afterwards whether it was two points dropped or one gained, to which he said: ” A bit of both.”
He said: “We managed to dig in at the end but we had some good chances, so it’s mixed emotions,”
The result means that Manchester City will be league champions if they win all of their remaining fixtures.
But Ramsdale said: “Liverpool are a top side, the crowd getting behind them, it might be two drops but we could have lost another one.. We’ve just got to go back and work hard, but one point is a lot better than none.”
