Arsenal 3 West Brom 0: All so easy for the Gunners
Saturday, 5th November 2011
NOTHING to moan about here for Arsenal fans says RICHARD OSLEY as the Gunners stroll past West Brom at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon.
FROM the moment Aaron Ramsey carved up the West Bromwich Albion defence with a pass that Cesc Fabregas would have been proud of, the result at the Emirates Stadium was never in doubt. Theo Walcott galloped into the space created by Ramsey's vision, bundled his shot into Ben Foster and when the ball spilled back out, Robin Van Persie – the man of the hour – stabbed Arsenal ahead. It was the 22nd minute. The next 68 were a stroll in the park.
West Brom were missing perhaps their best three players: Shane Long, Paul Scharner and Peter Odemwingie, who last year led the Baggies to a surprise victory at Ashburton Grove. But whereas last season West Brom matched imagination with enthusiastic endeavour, this time they seemed resigned to their fate. There must be worries for manager Roy Hodgson that the team is not providing greater tests for the top teams. Liverpool beat them with similar ease last week.
None of this was Arsenal's concern. The 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford earlier this season has not been forgotten but the confidence is growing and straightforward wins like this, without a single hiccup, will only make them stronger. The second goal cemented their superiority: Thomas Vermaelen seemed bored that he had so little to do in defence and had taken to loitering around the West Brom penalty area. When the Baggies struggled to get the ball clear following pressure from Alex Song, Theo Walcott and Gervinho, it was the big defender who finally steered the ball in. He is sorely missed during his long spells out injured. Arsenal need to keep him fit.
The mismatch made the second half dull. Dull is good for Arsenal fans given frights by nearly every other visting team here this season. Mikkel Arteta applied the icing with a thrashed finish from the edge of the box. They could have gone on and scored more but Arsenal seemed happy with three.
