Are libraries more hazardous than leisure centres or pubs?

Thursday, 23rd July 2020

• COUNCILLOR Jonathan Simpson said our libraries were undergoing a “thorough risk assessment” and some may partially reopen at the end of this month, (We look forward to welcoming you back to the libraries soon, July 16).

We were originally told the beginning of July. Why this long delay?

I have been repeatedly enquiring about this on behalf of Camden residents who rely on library services.

It has been difficult enough having no access to libraries for many elderly people, for whom the library is often the only way they can access the council’s services or send an email.

Now, with holidays upon us, there is also the question of no access to reading and study materials for many young people.

We are told the council is conducting a risk assessment, consulting the unions, possibly reopening computer facilities at St Pancras, Queen’s Crescent and West Hampstead by July 31; ditto at Swiss Cottage and Kilburn in mid-August.

In September all remaining Camden-run libraries are due to follow, plus a click-and-collect book service and “community facilities” thereafter.

This is a most unsatisfactory response and a totally unjustified delay. Why this extreme caution? Are our libraries so dangerous?

Cllr Simpson says they have to be “made safe” for staff and customers. Are libraries more hazardous than leisure centres or pubs? Is visiting a library now considered an extreme sport?

The only bright spot is that we won’t get charged fines for our overdue books!
