Architectural heritage to go

• I WRITE in response to Paul Dimoldenberg’s letter regarding the need for social housing, (Build more social housing, May 20).
Paul Dimoldenberg is a PR consultant for property developer, Adam Bier. He is disingenuous about his concerns over social housing.
The developer is appealing against the decision of Camden, who turned down a scheme in a back garden in Hillfield Road. The said plan does not provide any social housing and is wrecking precious garden space for profits only.
It costs the council tax payers money if there is an appeal and the new design being put forward by the developer is even more monstrous than the first.
By allowing developers to build on private gardens the local authority is not providing social housing.
The amount of space available on a back garden is not sufficient to provide adequate social housing. It only creates more pollution and destroys wildlife. It also ruins the quality of life of residents.
It is heart-breaking to see what is happening in Camden. Camden recently approved the demolition of a hostel in Chester Road designed by Bill Forest and regarded as a “gem”.
My father (project architect Highgate Newtown, phase 1) worked with Bill Forest, Peter Tabori, Neave Brown, Sam Webb, Gordon Benson, Alan Forsyth et al.
Under the leadership of Sydney Cook a team of young architects provided a standard of housing which was widely regarded as the most important urban housing built in the UK in the past 100 years.
Sadly councillors such as Danny Beales are giving the green light to destruction of Camden’s architectural heritage of the 1960s and 1970s. Once these buildings have gone they can never be replaced.
