Access and threats of legal action…
Thursday, 11th February 2021
• “HAS anyone else been threatened this way?” asks a letter-writer, (I’m fed up with Camden demanding access to my home in lockdown, February 4).
Like the writer we too have been isolating and refusing access to friends and family, as advised since March 2020, and recently received a letter threatening legal action if we did not give Camden Council access to carry out a gas safety check.
Unlike last week’s correspondent, we had allowed Camden’s contractor access – three testers and an engineer, on three separate occasions, (it required that number of visits for them to get it right). It also necessitated careful, time-consuming, sanitising after each visit.
However we had a certificate dated January 14 to prove our gas had been tested. Our case had been referred to the legal department who will “apply for a warrant to enter the premises. You will be liable to pay for the costs of any repairs to your front door”, the letter informed.
Upon phoning the number provided, and getting through to the named enforcement officer, we suffered the same fate as your correspondent and were subjected to an unfriendly and “hugely unprofessional response”.
And, again like last week’s writer, we have since received a call for access to carry out an electrical test.
However the day before the tester was due to arrive the contractor phoned to inform us Camden had withdrawn the contract and the tester would not be coming.
Another threatening letter in the post?
