A welcome in the libraries
Thursday, 22nd September 2022
• LIBRARIES as warm banks are probably the best initial fit, (Camden begins search for places to set up ‘warm banks’ amid bills crisis, September 15).
They are conveniently located, staffed for many hours, and even the smaller ones have ample room for a hot drinks machine which should be run on a not-for-profit basis.
There are plenty of books and computers to use. If people bring in a portable CD player and earplugs they may use a huge range of material and anything that is not to hand may be ordered.
Since online newspapers are a very poor imitation of the real thing, the papers delivered before the pandemic should now be restored.
Chairs might be an issue; West Hampstead library should ask for the return of the blue “reception area” seats which were lifted without consultation and other libraries might make similar requests. Anyway I suspect that the council has a large stock of seating sitting in a storage depot somewhere.
I am sure that the new deputy head of libraries will welcome the publicity and activity that the new arrangements will provide and could chisel out of the chief executive a modest budget to expand the usefulness of facilities.
