Golden doners on lampposts

‘Those ridiculous so-called ‘golden doners’ are back on the lamp-posts of Camden Town’

• DOES Camden Council fund, even in part, Camden Town Unlimited?

You report (Golden doners’ return, April 7) that those ridiculous so-called “golden doners” are back on the lamp-posts of Camden Town.

It’s no wonder that many locals thought these light features are Christmas decorations but, as I have pointed out in your letters columns in the past, these things have been on 24/7/365 for many years.

Camden Town Unlimited clearly has limited sense when it comes to both money and the environment. Perhaps the organisation should be renamed Camden Town Unhinged.

Using precious, non-renewable, energy resources for these lights to be on every minute of the year is beyond absurd and, moreover, it sets a bad example.

For CTU to claim that these lights are a way of keeping NW1 sparkling is plain daft, especially leaving them on when daylight lasts 16 hours in June and bright sunshine obscures the lights left on almost entirely.

On its website CTU has a page for the Camden Green Loop – surely the letter “y” is missing from that last word given CTU’s disinterest in green matters.

Turn the silly lights off in daylight, if not completely, and spend the money instead on updating the CTU website and cleaning graffiti from the painted railway bridges at Camden Road station.

Ask businesses and residents what they want in Camden Town and I’ll bet it’s not silly lighting left on 24/7 but graffiti removal 24/7, clean streets 24/7, safe streets 24/7.
