A plan for a 23-storey tower is the wrong idea for our borough

bacton low rise model

A model of the proposed new tower

• I READ with absolute dismay about the latest proposal to build a 23-storey tower block on the site of the previous Bacton Low Rise estate, (Tower block lined up for ‘low rise’ estate near Queen’s Crescent, October 31).

Not only has the site been vacant since demolition in 2018 and the planning permission approved in 2013, the lack of engagement with the community has been notable.

Consultations ought to be widely publicised to ensure local residents can attend. Instead the newest proposal by Mount Anvil is too high, has a lesser proportion of social housing but even
more private flats, thus placing more pressure on the local infrastructure; never mind the long shadow it will cast to block much-needed light.

Such developments hugely impact residents and visitors to the area. You only have to look at the looming towers of the Chalk Farm development to envisage such impact.

Isn’t it time that we were listened to by Camden Council officers and developers to avoid our area becoming akin to Hong Kong, for example?

The emphasis on building in the borough should be about affordable housing and not building the “Camden brand”.
