A people’s vote can’t be a rerun referendum

• SANJOY Sen makes some sensible points – which is why a people’s vote must not be a rerun of the referendum but instead present people with clearly delineated, tangible options in order that people can make an informed choice, (The people have voted, remember!, August 9).

The reasons why people originally voted as they did were many and varied but no one voted to be worse off financially, to be less secure, to lead an inferior quality of life or to have the prospects for their children and grandchildren jeopardised.

As the true intricacies of Brexit unfold, the risk of all of these outcomes becoming reality is growing. There was also a tacit assumption the government would negotiate in good faith and keep the interests of the citizens of this country to the fore but it has singularly failed to do so.

It is therefore essential that we “take back control” and not let our futures be dictated by government incompetence, dogma and intransigence.

Whichever way people voted in the referendum it is important they have an opportunity to hold the government to account.
