The magnificent magnolia tree in Regent’s Park Road

• JUST read John Gulliver’s excellent piece on the recently disappeared magnolia at 106-108 Regent’s Park Road, (Why don’t our trees merit protection? January 30).

I live round the corner and so was also shocked at the tree’s sudden disappearance. There was no notice or proper consultation, as you said, so before I’d read your article, I’d actually written to the Camden trees department to complain.

I bet that the replacement tree will be much more modest in stature and carefully contained. I very much doubt if it will ever give anyone protection from the rain again.
