A credible vote for the planet

Thursday, 10th March

• YOUR Comment column bemoans the growth of spin-doctored career politicians in recent years, (Politics is too important to be left to the professionals, March 3).

Camden has its share of councillors “who have only had a role in politics prior to running for elected office”.

This has resulted in a council leadership that seems unable to hear residents’ concerns, while it reneges on commitments such as its declaration of Climate and Ecological Emergency and supports major developments that destroy local communities.

In response, we have set up One Vote for the Planet to provide a platform for independent concerned citizens to stand in the local elections in May.

We aim to field one candidate in each ward to give all Camden residents the opportunity to elect someone from outside of our broken political system who will do all they can to hold the council to account.

We are not aiming to take over the council – that’s why we’re only fielding one candidate per ward. That means residents can still give their remaining votes to their preferred party.

Our objective is to enable a wide mix of people to bring their skills and experience to help run our diverse, vibrant borough.

Last month, the United Nations Intergovern-mental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) painted a dire picture of the pace of human-induced climate change, which is causing “dangerous and widespread disruption in nature and affecting the lives of billions of people around the world”.

Yet those in power locally are failing to take meaningful action to cut carbon emissions or protect the environment. It doesn’t seem to be a priority for any political party.

“Wouldn’t it be refreshing if we had a council chamber full of credible and lively politicians, from all walks of life, after the local elections in May?” you ask. We agree and believe we have taken the first steps.
