A country which has been quite chequered in the past

• THERE are many who, with Caribbean origins, go by the names of those who oppressed their ancestors. These include many British sports people.

And, in America, not only George Floyd but several descendants of president Thomas Jefferson with his slave Sally Hemings who have carried on with their mostly English names.

Your reports of name changes in two Camden cases (September 23) are understood, and the low-key options such as “Park View House”.

As the son of two immigrant parents I have sometimes wondered how universally acceptable are statues such as those to Oliver Cromwell, or pub names which might cause upset if people from certain backgrounds took offence (think of the Saracen’s Head, or Black Bess – actually the horse belonging to the dangerous Dick Turpin, and not a person).

It may be best if such names are permitted to be absorbed into the history of a country which has been quite chequered in the past!
