Oliver Heaviside

A SELF-TAUGHT maths genius who had a terrible start to life is to be honoured with a plaque in Camden Town, writes Richard Osley.

English Heritage is using its tribute scheme to mark the former home of Oliver Heaviside in Camden Street.

While growing up  there in the 19th century, he suffered hearing loss from scarlet fever. Some later regarded him as an “eccentric”.

Nevertheless, despite the lack of formal education, he worked to become a leading authority on electromagnetic theory and the development of  telephone transmission.

He died in 1925.

English Heritage is waiting for planning consent for the plaque.
