• IT was with some relief that I learnt from the pages of the latest Camden magazine that it is really unlikely that I would be prosecuted for exceeding the 20mph speed limit.

I know the stats show a massive reduction in the chances of someone being killed by a vehicle from 20 per cent to 2.5 per cent if a motorist is doing 20mph instead of 30mph.

But, honestly, have you tried driving at 20mph? It is so “painfully” slow! It is completely unacceptable that I should pay tens of thousands for my car that performs best at 120mph when I can be overtaken by a person on a bicycle!

Besides roads are meant for cars not people. So if a pedestrian or cyclist gets hit by a car it is clearly their own fault for being on the road anyway (as the derisory sentences resulting from most collision prosecutions can testify).

So hats off to the common-sense approach taken by our local police force in deciding to issue a warning letter for not only the first but also the second time they catch me doing my modest 30mph in the 20mph zone; and thereafter, letting me know that if I continue to speed I “may” be added to their database for “possible” enforcement.

Much better idea than a fine and/or points on my licence as soon as I am caught, which would certainly make me think twice before I exceeded this ridiculous speed limit.

I think they should apply the same system to speeding on the motorways – don’t you?
