A campaigning print journalist
Thursday, 15th April 2021
• ABOVE everything, my admiration for Eric Gordon is focused on him as a campaigning print journalist, (Eric Gordon: Tributes to Camden’s great chronicler as founder and editor of CNJ dies at 89, April 8).
He supported the “Camden Charter” initiative to run a slate of independent candidates to challenge against a complacent Labour council some years ago.
Currently Eric has kept the fire alive in Nick Harding’s fight to make sure Camden claims what is owed to the people of Camden from the profits of private developers at Prince’s Park flats, Kentish Town West.
In only a very few years, local newspapers, an essential element in calling local councils to account, have either disappeared or been turned into weak imitations by national owners with interest mainly in advertising revenue.
A friend in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, told me recently that he asks a Camden resident to send him the CNJ. It doesn’t have much on Wisbech, but what my friend wants to see is a newspaper with commitment to the local community.
Thank you, Eric and everyone who makes the CNJ what it is today.
