THE borough’s police commander has hit out at sunbathers defying the coronavirus social distancing rules to enjoy the warm weekend weather on Highbury Fields.

Pictures shared on social media show people soaking up the sun in the park, despite government rules forbidding people to go outside for anything other than exercise, medical reasons or to pick up essential items such as food.

Speaking to the Tribune, Chief Supt Raj Kohli said he was worried the problem could worsen over the coming Easter weekend, and urged people to stick to the government guidelines.

“People should not be outside sunbathing,” he said.

“All we’re asking for is that people stay indoors for a few weeks.

“It’s really important that you stick to the guidelines.”

Current government guidelines state that everybody must stay at home except for the following reasons:

  • Exercise – alone, or with members of your household
  • Shopping for basic necessities
  • Medical need, or providing care for a vulnerable person
  • Travel to or from work, but only when it’s impossible to work from home
