Opposition parties name Haverstock by-election candidates

Charity worker and former model on the ballot paper

THE Liberal Democrats and Conservatives have quickly installed candidates to stand in a council by-election next month.

Voters in the Haverstock ward will be asked to vote in both the general election and a ballot to elect a new councillor on December 12 after Labour’s Abi Wood decided to quit the Town Hall.

Charity worker Jack Fleming will be the Lib Dem candidate, while Catherine McQueen, the former model and property expert, has been chosen by the Tories.

Labour has yet to announce their candidate but is not opening the process up to members. Instead, one of the losing council election candidates from last year’s boroughwide poll will be selected.

The three seats in the ward have been held by Labour since 2014, but the Liberal Democrats have had councillors there in the past.

A second by-election could be called in Frognal if Henry Newman, a Conservative councillor, wins a parliamentary selection contest in the Oxfordshire constituency of Wantage this evening (Monday).
