8 Women Cert 15 Dir Francois Ozon
8 WOMEN

Set in the very stylised 1950s at a French country house over Christmas, 8 Women is both a murder mystery, a musical, and a catwalk show for France’s finest actresses (bar Juliet Binoche, who would never do this kind of thing because she can’t remove the sheen of tears from her eyes long enough to break into song whilst applying a deep red lipstick, and bless her for never trying).

So, Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Beart, Isabelle Huppert and Virginie Ledoyen head the cast in a kitsch melodrama punctuated with songs and gags. It’s most peculiar (the French, with the exception of Belmondo, cannot be funny) and represents the height of some kind of refinement, although I’m not sure which. Let’s just say it wears its ironic credentials up front.
