‘Let us view alternative visions for Tube station’
PROTESTERS are demanding that the inquiry into London Underground’s plans to redevelop Camden Town Tube station is put on hold after transport bosses refused demands that alternative blueprints should be shown at a public exhibition.

Campaign group Keep It Camden (Kic) is demanding that the 16 alternative designs rejected by London Transport are displayed at an exhibition before the public inquiry, which is likely to be held at the start of next year.

The current designs submitted by London Underground involve demolition of buildings on a triangle of land behind the station, which would mean the Electric Ballroom nightclub, Buck Street Market and the United Trinity Reform Church all facing the bulldozer if compulsory purchase orders are approved.

Under the controversial £100 million revamp, the station will be replaced by a seven-storey glass tower with shops and flats.

Campaigners support the upgrade but say it can be achieved without demolishing the surrounding block.

In a letter to London Underground, Kic objector Steve Lucas said: “Without at least having drawings, it is difficult to appraise the alternatives. I must therefore ask for another public exhibition during the next six weeks, showing these alternatives in more detail.”
But a London Underground consultation manager ruled out staging an exhibition.

“I do not deem it necessary to hold a public exhibition,” he said in a written reply. “This information is in the public domain and will be available at the public inquiry.”

A Kic spokesman said on Tuesday: “Objectors are being asked to comment on the other proposals London Underground rejected, and why they chose the scheme they are trying to push through, but we can’t actually see the others.

“If the public can’t see them before the public inquiry, it may have to be adjourned for an exhibition.”
