Murder police insist: ‘We got the right man’
A DRUG addict was stabbed to death by another addict in a row about a Somers Town squat, an inquest has heard.
But nearly five years after schoolchildren found 34-year-old Steven Devaney dead on parkland off Polygon Road, and despite the involvement of the FBI, nobody has stood trial for his murder.
Police told St Pancras Coroner’s Court on Thursday that they still believe they were correct to charge a fellow addict with Mr Devaney’s death.
Detective Inspector Robert Anderson said: “The Crown Prosecution Service said there was not enough evidence to proceed with the prosecution.
“But we believe we got the right man – there were witnesses.”
DI Anderson said rivals of Mr Devaney, of Levita House, Chalton Street, had attempted to take over the Camden Council flat he squatted in because they believed drugs and alcohol were hidden there. He added: “This is a very sad case.”
A post-mortem by Home Office pathologist Dr David Rowse showed that Mr Devaney had been stabbed and his throat lacerated with a sharp object.
His body was found on September 24, 1999, in parkland next to the Coopers Lane estate.
DI Anderson said: “We honestly believe there are no further inquiries that can be made.
“There was CCTV of two people walking in the park but the camera’s view was obscured by trees.
“The camera was probably installed in the winter when there were no leaves on the trees.
“We worked with the BBC and even the FBI to improve the quality of the CCTV footage but it did not help.”
Verdict: unlawful killing.
