Town Hall chief sees raid on crack houses

The raid at Hornbeam House

The raid at Wendling House
POLICE smashed their way into two Camden crack houses on Friday morning – watched by Labour council leader Councillor Dame Jane Roberts.
Officers raided flats in Hornbeam House on the Maitland Park estate in Chalk Farm and at Wendling House in Gospel Oak, arresting two women and recovering cocaine, heroin, stolen credit cards and drugs paraphernalia.
A shower of glass rained down as police in body armour dived in through a window in the high-profile raid at Hornbeam House.
At Wendling House, police again climbed in through a smashed window rather than using the door.
Familiar complaints by neighbours about drug addicts coming and going at all hours, using stairwells to take drugs and as toilets had been made over the last month to officers working on the new Safer Neighbourhoods teams in Haverstock and Gospel Oak wards.
Senior officers hope the teams, which work full-time at ward level and cannot be moved elsewhere to cover other police operations, will continue to receive good information from residents.
PC Michael Branford said: “The idea was to send a clear message.
“Hopefully, it will deal with the problem but also send a message to the other tenants that we are acting on the information we receive.
“The operation was designed to be seen.”
Cllr Roberts, who joined the officers from Kentish Town in the mid-morning raid, said: “I was impressed with the professionalism of the police going in so swiftly and searching for evidence of drug use and dealing.
“It shows what can be done when residents, the council and the police come together to tackle anti-social behaviour.”
Two women aged 41 and 49 were bailed to reappear at a Camden police station later this month.
