Head's farewell to school after 20 years

A GOSPEL Oak headteacher has closed her register for the last time after 20 years in the job.
Television traveller Michael Palin, former council leader Councillor Dame Jane Roberts, new leader Councillor Raj Chada and Councillor John Mills were among those who said farewell to Dalu Chowdhury at a packed leaving party at Carlton Primary School in Grafton Road on Tuesday. Ms Chowdhury, 60, said of her time at the school: “I have learnt resilience, good humour, the ability to resolve conflict without resorting to any form of aggression and the ability to say sorry without any inhibition.”
She described the pupils as “the most wonderful gift Carlton has given me”, adding: “It’s the child who says ‘I’m not shy any more’ or ‘I can speak English now’. What can be more exciting than that?”
Mr Palin, a patron of the school, said: “The children here have a great spirit, and a lot of that’s from Dalu. She involves herself in every aspect of the school and the children. She has been utterly committed.”
Miss Chowdhury plans to spend the next three months visiting family and friends in India. On her return she hopes to take up a teaching consultancy post at Camden schools.
Jacqi Phelan, deputy head for seven years, will take over as headteacher.
Pictured standing in front of the banner all the children in the school helped to make for Dalu Chowdhury are patron of the school Michael Palin, Dalu Chowdhury, retired teaching assistant May Roan, and Jacqi Phelan, who will take over from Miss Chowdhury as Head in the new year.
