Tribune
probe reveals ministers conflict of interest
LORD Adonis in charge of the governments flagship
city academy education reforms has been told he cannot make
any rulings on an Islington school due to a potential conflict of
interest, revealed by a Tribune investigation.
He will have to hand over responsibility over the future of Islington
Green School applying for academy status to another
education minister, we can disclose. This follows revelations by
the Tribune that his children, who attend a nearby primary school,
could go to Islington Green in the future. Lord Adonis also has
strong ties with the borough, living only one mile away from school.
His children currently attend a Canonbury primary school. The National
Union of Teachers (NUT) say that because his children will soon
be eligible to attend Islington Green it represents a clear conflict
of interest.
Islington Green will be rebuilt in a multi-million programme.
The project was already well underway when Lord Adonis (pictured)
was appointed as education minister earlier this year after working
as a special advisor to the Prime Minister. |

| Inspectors
praise Town Hall |
TOP Marks have been awarded to Islington Council by government inspectors
who this week praised it as improving well.
The Audit Commissions Comprehensive Performance Assessment
(CPA), released yesterday, awarded the borough three-star status.
The council scored three out of four in every area, including housing
and children with many of the ratings higher than 2004. Its over
all ranking was also three out of a possible four.
Under the environment section, it only scored two the same
as last year.
The review is deemed to be a harder test than in previous years.
Statistically, the three star status is the same as the old good
grade, which Islington achieved last year. However, the analysis
local authorities had to undergo this time around was tougher.
Islington jumped from poor to good in two
years.
This years report states: Improvements are being achieved
in priority areas such as social housing, education and housing
benefits. In general, 78 per cent of the key local government performance
indicators show Islington improving since 2002/03, albeit starting
from a low base in some areas. |
