Bogus doctor conned his patients out of thousands

Jail for Harley Street physician who was unmasked as fraud and swindler

A TRUSTED ‘doctor’ has begun a 30 month jail sentence after being exposed as a fraud and swindler.
Following a lengthy police investigation into the activities of Harley Street-based Syed Jameel, it was discovered he was not medically qualified, the Old Bailey heard.
He dealt with male patients who had intimate sexual problems. But he defrauded them, pocketing thousands of pounds.
Prosecutor John Price said: “He said he was registered with the General Medical Council. Investigations that followed not only revealed that not only had he been dishonestly practising as a doctor but had exploited the esteem in which the profession is held”.
He added: “Nothing he says can be trusted. The prosecution are not even willing to accept that he was qualified as a doctor. Any documents which he purports show that he is a doctor we say are false.”
Jameel, of Broadhurst Gardens, Swiss Cottage, was trapped when the words bona fide on an EEC certificate were misspelt. He also, in error, said he was “in practice”. The 48-year-old was arrested in May last year after allegedly gaining £140,000 by deception between August 2002 and April 2004.
Born in Lahore, Pakistan, Jameel was convicted on charges of false pretenses. He told police that he qualified as a doctor in Pakistan and worked in a hospital before moving to private practice and specialising in sexual problems. Jameel worked at a Harley Street clinic and at a diagnostic clinic in Cavendish Street. He always maintained that he made it clear that he was not registered with the GMC.
Mr Price told the jury: “He said that he informed every patient he treated that he was not registered with the GMC.”
He added “It is surprising, given that he purports to be a heart specialist, that he was counselling male patients with psycho-sexual problems.”
