Give our school kids a sporting chance

DON’T know about you but I hated sport at school. It was all that prancing around in your knickers practising forward rolls and star jumps that did it.
But if PE ranked up there amongst the dreaded metalwork and domestic science, at least we did get the opportunity to try it during school time.
Unlike some youngsters in this borough it seems. According to an Ofsted report (see back page), almost half of schools are not giving their pupils the hoped for two hours of PE a week.
The reasons are far from straightforward. Perhaps teachers are under pressure to spend time in class in order to get the exam results right, there may not be enough time in the day, there might not be the space to exercise in or it might just not be seen as a priority.
Thank goodness then for the efforts of the primary school centred Camden Schools Sports Association and more recently, the Camden Secondary Schools Federation.
Both offer competition in a variety of sports throughout the year and given the attendance at their events by schools, it looks as though they are a lifeline for teachers bogged down by league tables and results.
If ever any two bodies and the people behind them deserved recognition for their efforts it is these.
