School gets good grades as the inspector calls

Camden School for Girls is one of the country’s best say Ofsted

GOVERNMENT inspectors have named Camden School for Girls as one of the country’s best – for a third year in a row.
Ofsted’s most senior inspector David Bell visited the school in Sandall Road yesterday (Wednesday) to congratulate teachers.
The school has been recognised for three years of “outstanding achievement”, joining an exclusive list of 457 institution across the country. Camden School for Girls is one of just five in London to receive the accolade for three years in a row.
It was rated excellent for teaching and learning, noted for its very high pass rates, and outstanding support for students. Staff were told the school had outstanding leadership and management and that there was very good teamwork throughout.
Mr Bell – a former headteacher – dropped in on a sixth form lesson during his tour.
He said: “Days like this give you a lift. What is really impressive is that a school should be able to maintain this outstanding standard for three years. It is easy to say that these results reflect a certain kind of pupil and that anyone who comes here is then guaranteed good grades. What is really impressive is that there is a powerful sense of motivation in pupils and staff.”
Headteacher Anne Canning praised the commitment of her staff.
She said: “We have an outstanding group of staff who are interested in the development of the students. The students do so well because they engage with wider social issues that helps them tap into a sense of social justice.”
St Patrick’s Primary School in Holmes Road, Kentish Town, has also emerged as one of the country’s top performers in national league tables. The school was named sixth in the entire country in the so-called ‘value added’ category – a measurement of pupil progress.
Camden’s schools chief Councillor Lucy Anderson said: “This is a real achievement. Value added measures are particularly important, because they reflect how well a school is working. The fact that Camden’s schools have scored so highly in this area shows that we are working in partnership successfully with them to ensure every child achieves the best they possibly can.”
Although Camden’s primary schools in general had a lower pupil performance than several other London boroughs, including neighbouring Westminster, Cllr Anderson said the scores were encouraging.
