Spanish men in black run the line for Sunday leaguers

A SPANISH flavour spiced up the second round of the Camden New Journal-sponsored Challenge Cup on Sunday after referees from Barcelona saved the day.
Camden Sunday League officials found themselves four referees down on Saturday night after their regular men in black were hit by injuries and flu.
But Sunday League referee Chris Hall hit upon the idea of drafting in a bunch of visiting Spanish refs who were in London for a friendly against Premier League, Football Association and Football League referees in Cockfosters.
And the Barcelona-based officials were more than happy to swap their usual diet of professional football in La Liga’s lower division for windswept Hackney Marsh pitches and gritty north London tackles.
After running the line in Hoxton Foxes and Broadlane’s Challenge Cup battle, Pery Maria insisted it had been an education.
He said:“It was a nice experience and we enjoyed it.
“The players were very sporting and had a good sense of team work.”
Unfortunately for the Spanish refs, their trip to the capital was not all roses – they went on to lose their match against the English contingent 4-1. There were happier results for holders Reddot A from Kentish Town and three-times winners Steeles from Belsize Park who both made it through to the quarters.
