Actor Tom launches parking campaign

IRATE motorists including Hampstead actor Tom Conti have launched a campaign to cut Camden’s parking fines, targeting May’s council elections.
London Motorists Action Group says the £18 million profit the Town Hall made from parking tickets last year shows it is more interested in raising cash from drivers than keeping the streets moving.
Mr Conti (pictured), of Reddington Road joined the campaign after a visit from a Camden Council bailiff over a disputed ticket on his Mercedes limousine cost him £600.
He said: “The council need to be reminded that they were set up to make life easier for residents, not more difficult.”
The campaign is chaired by Tory peer Lord Lucas and run by Alex Henney, of Swain’s Lane, Highgate, who contributed to Camden Conservative’s review of parking control earlier this year. But the group insists it is not party political – a claim dismissed by Town Hall environment chief Cllr John Thane.
Cllr Thane said: “The majority of people in Hampstead and across Camden accept the need for parking control but there will always be a minority of motorists who get angry when they get a ticket and are prepared to back a campaign like this.”
