PROTEST AT 'DEATH' JAIL

A DEMONSTRATION was held outside Holloway prison on Wednesday following the death of a woman inmate – the fourth to die in the prison in 18 months.
Karen Ann Fletcher, 30, who was serving a sentence for arson, is believed to have taken her own life while in a cell two weeks ago.
The protest was organised by retired college lecturer Pauline Campbell, 57, who was arrested and taken to Islington police station after she stood in front of a prison van carrying inmates and refused to move, barring its access to the entrance of the prison. She was later released without charge.
Mrs Campbell’s own 18-year-old daughter Sarah died in a
cell after being admitted to Styal prison, Cheshire, three years ago.
A total of 29 women have reportedly committed suicide in British prisons since January 2003.
Mrs Campbell said her own daughter was seriously depressed but put in an isolation block. “The point is that many of these women who take their on lives are in need of mental health care and not punishment.

Blunder threatens Academy

CAMPAIGNERS fighting a proposed new city academy expressed delight this week after a planning blunder threatened the future of the project.
Failure by Islington Council to consult English Heritage over the 1,400 pupils St Mary Magdalene Academy means building work has ceased and the entire site design may have to be radically altered. It follows the threat of legal action by Holloway residents, Rani Bibi and Terry Powers – reported in this paper two weeks ago – who argued that the new school would ruin “the conservation setting” of the area.
Islington council and the Diocese of London, which is providing £2million towards its establishment, was granted planning permission for the academy in Liverpool Road, earlier this year.
But in a dramatic move planning permission was quashed on Friday because of what Islington council leader Cllr Steve Hitchins described as a “technical error”. Finsbury solicitors Leigh Day initially forecast a High Court hearing for December Mr Bibi and Mr Powers.
