Let’s teach our kids a bit of respect

I’VE been surrounded by fighting talk this week. Purely on a professional level of course but it has made me think.
It started after seeing Martin Power retain his title in the York Hall (see opposite) and ended after meeting boys from the historic St Pancras Amateur Boxing Club where he began his career.
Discussing the pros and cons of boxing with acquaintances afterwards, I was struck by the verdict that it is all well and good but not the kind of sport they would want their sons or daughters to get into.
A hefty dose of not in my back yard if ever I heard it.
But I’m not so sure. On my way to see St Pancras boys, the kids in my ‘back yard’ were kicking their heels on the street corners.
In their training room, the young amateurs I’d gone to see were keeping fit and learning self discipline, all the while treating myself and their coaches with the kind of respect a few professional footballers would do well to learn.
Rose tinted glasses this maybe, but as good an argument as any for the borough to do what was first mooted in May when Martin Power initally won his title and finally celebrate the achievements of the man whose footsteps many of these boys aspire to follow.
