Stalker in court for ringing bell

Town Hall leader harassed for 30 years

Dame Jane Roberts

A STALKER who harassed Camden Council chief Dame Jane Roberts for three decades has admitted loitering outside her home.
Over the course of 30 years, David Philips, 69, wrote a string of letters, phoned and visited the council leader, who steps down from her post next week, at her home and the hospital where she worked as a child psychiatrist.
He was yesterday (Wednesday) sentenced to a three-year community order after pleading guilty to breaching a restraining order banning him from contacting the recently married Dame Jane.
Appearing before Highbury Corner Magistrates Court, Philips, of Peckham, was accused of ringing the doorbell and loitering outside her Kentish Town home in June this year.
The pair met when they were working for the Labour Party during the Greater London Council election campaign in 1973.
Philips was also found to have breached the order in January 2002, three months after it was made.
Magistrates at the time detained him indefinitely at a psychiatric hospital in south London under the Mental Health Act.
