Sanctions plea at conference

INTERNATIONAL law experts spoke at a Bloomsbury conference on Palestine, Israel and the Law at the weekend.
Human rights lawyer Geoffrey Bindman, of Binman and Partners in King’s Cross, chaired a session on Flouting International Law at the conference in the Institute of Education in Bedford Way on Saturday.
More than 300 people heard speakers who included Dr Mustapha Barghouti, secretary of the Palestinian National Initiative, Dr Oren Ben-Dor, a law lecturer who has supported an academic boycott of Israel, and senior lawyer Marwan Dalal, who was recently involved in an Israeli Supreme Court challenge over the use of Palestinian civilians as human shields.
Dr Barghouti called for immediate sanctions, comparing Palestine to apartheid South African.
He told the meeting: “We will never ever give up without getting our freedom. I want to be able to move freely like you do.”
He decried Palestinian reliance on financial support from other countries, saying: “We are not only occupied by Israel, we also have at least 40 countries around the world telling us what to do with our money because they all gave money to us. It’s very confusing because they all think they know best.”
