I know! Invest in community

I CAN’T swim. In fact, I’d rather spend the night watching a double bill of the Krankies and Michael Barrymore than walk into a swimming baths.
But I’ve spent enough holidays standing on the shore while my pals frolick in the water to know that I’d love to conquer my fears one day.
Judging by the fact that around 600 people are learning to swim every week in Kentish Town baths alone, I’m not the only one.
But if so many would-be swimmers are packing into a pool that hardly boasts the reputation as the most state-of-the-art in the land, it is surely one of this community’s most valuable assets.
Sure, this Victorian throw-back needs a small fortune spending on it to turn it around. But in this city of dwindling public spaces, isn’t this one building worth investing in?
n LAST week’s Local Club for Local People comment appeared to touch a nerve.
Among the letters in our postbag was one from John Mitchell, who signed himself a “football fan for 40 years”.
John hasn’t been able to watch Kentish Town since they moved to Potters Bar but he says: “I would be there every week if they had a ground in the area, that is for sure.”
Well, here’s a thought: the £2 billion redevelopment plans for King’s Cross – which currently include a swimming pool, indoor sports hall and park – went out for consultation on Monday.
Don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better place to build a community football club. And I’d love to see what would happen if everyone with a stake in the game in this area, from players, to coaches, parents and fans, lobbied during this consultation phase for exactly that.
It may be a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, but as my granny used to say, if you don’t ask you don’t get.
