Top officer faces manslaughter rap

A HIGHLY-decorated police officer is due to face an Old Bailey court next year accused over the death of a man in a cell.
Sergeant Matthew Walters, 35, the most decorated police officer in Camden, and a colleague constable Simon Jefferson, 27, who is charged with him, were released on bail from Bow Street Magistrates court on September 26.
They were committed for trial to the Old Bailey in connection with the death of 47-year-old Enzo Stompanato, arrested in Euston Road for being drunk and disorderly on December 15, 2002. Soon afterwards the suspect was found dead from a heroin overdose in a custody area at Holborn Police Station.
PC Jefferson is accused of unlawful killing – manslaughter – by gross negligence, perverting the course of justice.
Sergeant Walters faces allegations of perverting justice and forgery.
The charges following an investigation into the circumstances of Mr Stompanato’s death, custody procedures and a claim of a cover up.
The case is listed for a preliminary hearing on 23 January.
