£2bn King’s Cross plan could go green in latest proposals

REVISED proposals for a £2 billion building scheme in King’s Cross – Europe’s largest development project – could include plans for more greenery, shorter buildings, more affordable housing and renewable energy.
New proposals, due to be submitted to Camden and Islington councils by developers Argent (King’s Cross Ltd), London and Continental Railways and Exel plc later this week, were discussed at a meeting of the King’s Cross development forum on Tuesday. Critics had attacked plans submitted to Town Hall planning bosses last year for providing too many offices and not enough leisure facilities and housing.
The forum, chaired by Satnam Gill – principal of the Working Men’s College in Crowndale Road – have been meeting to allow residents affected by the plans to air their views.
Camden planning officer Richard Kirby told the meeting the changes were “significant but not enormous”.
Bosses are planning six public workshops that will cover topics in detail including transport, design and heritage and the environment – and a discussion with developers Argent.
Labour councillor Theo Blackwell, executive member for sustainability, said: “We want local people to have their say. The consultation will close on November 21 and it is important that people comment now before the proposals go forward for a decision early in the new year.”
Mr Gill said: “If Argent have listened to the community the changed scheme will include more affordable housing, more open space, educational facilities, and jobs.”
The proposals cover 67 acres of land behind King’s Cross and St Pancras Stations.
The main site of 64.5 acres falls within the borough of Camden while the 2.5 acre Triangle site sits within Camden and Islington.

• An event outlining the new plans takes place at the German Gym in St Pancras Road on Saturday between 10.30 and 2pm, with a six-week consultation due to begin on October 10.
