Writer in a froth over sale of favourite Italian café

Writer AN Wilson
FOR writer AN Wilson the sale of his favourite Italian café is the end of an era.
The New Goodfare, at the corner of Parkway and Arlington Road in Camden Town, was sold two weeks ago for an undisclosed sum rumoured to be in six figures.
New owner Numan Devrim, 35, says he does not plan major changes, but Mr Wilson, who strolls down to the café in the mornings from his home in nearby Regent’s Park Terrace, is apprehensive.
Luciano Tambini, who set up the café in 1965, decorated its walls with murals of the Bay of Naples.
Mr Wilson, who discovered the Goodfare when he moved to Camden Town 15 years ago, said: “My favourite waitress, Francesca, has already left. I hope this is not just another loss to Parkway.”
Mr Tambini blamed falling trade for the sale. He said: “We used to be full and now it is empty. There are too many cafés here now.”
Mr Devrim plans to pay homage to the former owner’s Italian roots. He said: “It looks like a rundown workman’s café. I want to make it look more Italian, cosy and casual.
“I’m keeping all the same people. I’ve got a chef who’s been here for 29 years and a waitress who’s been here for 40. I’m not going to change the food or the prices.”
Other café regulars include Chelsea footballer Joe Cole, who owns a taxi firm just yards away.
