| Dame Jane to quit her post |
CAMDEN Council leader Dame Jane Roberts last night (Thursday)
revealed shock plans to quit her chief position.
She told close colleagues that she will not seek re-election as
leader of the council when the ruling Labour Party vote on senior
positions early next month.
After nearly six years in charge, Dame Jane is regularly tipped
for a career in Westminster and is known to have close links with
MPs.
Earlier this year she was invited to Chequers to meet Prime Minister
Tony Blair.
But the full reasons behind her sudden departure remain shrouded
in mystery.
A clearer picture is expected to emerge this afternoon (Friday)
when Dame Jane faces journalists in a round of interviews.
Officials in the Town Halls press office confirmed that Dame
Jane planned to end her spell at Camdens helm but would not
be drawn on her reasons for stepping down.
Her decision automatically throws open a race for the Labour leadership
and the top position at the council.
No obvious figures were emerging last night (Thursday) but deputy
leaders Phil Turner and Theo Blackwell, as well as environment supremo
John Thane and housing boss Raj Chada, are likely to be amongst
the frontrunners. |
