Tribute to 'feminity', disability and motherhood' unveiled on fourth plinth

A GLEAMING marble statue of naked pregnant woman with no arms was finally unveiled yesterday (Thursday) on the fourth plinth of Trafalgar Square. Hundreds braved the rain for a first glimpse of Marc Quinn’s sculpture of his friend, Alison Lapper Pregnant (pictured right and, before the unveiling).
Ms Lapper of Shoreham in West Sussex described the 12-foot sculpture of herself as a “modern tribute to femininity, disability and motherhood”.
There was huge applause at the unveiling for the sculpture that proved a controversial choice in the art world.
Quinn’s sculpture will remain on the plinth for 18 months when it will be replaced by Hotel for the Birds by Thomas Schutte.
