G, a whizz of a show

Artist G is no stranger to fame, and that is reflected in his portraits of modern icons, writes Kim Janssen

WHEN it comes to fame, Swiss Cottage artist G, knows his fair share. His glam metal band, Girl, hit the top 20 back when he was a teenager and the singles chart still meant something.
His 20s and 30s saw him record with some of the biggest artists of the 1980s, including Duran Duran star John Taylor, and manage the hottest video director of the era, Russ Mulcahy, responsible for promos that defined the look of the decade.
Now in his 40s, he hasn’t stopped creating.
Returning to his art school roots, he is now on his fourth career as a painter and fine artist – his latest show opens soon at the reopened Belsize Park Library.
But despite his success, G, whose real name is Gerry Laffy (disappointingly he signs his cheques in full, too), still can’t believe he lost a work by one of his heroes – one that might be worth more than all his pictures put together if found.
He says: “About 20 years ago I had three signed prints of the famous Warhol Marilyn Monroe – God knows what happened to them but they must be worth a fortune now. I have pictures of them on the wall but not the prints themselves.
