Cheers for the catwalk kids as the market shows off the latest fashions

EVEN a bevy of supermodels would have been upstaged at Thursday’s fashion show on the Lock.
When the market held its annual fashion show, which started five years ago, the biggest cheer of the night went to youngsters from the Primrose Hill Primary School. Walking onto the catwalk in T-shirts that reached down to their knees, they were donning the entries of a nationwide competition for the charity Traidcraft. Mayor of Camden, Barbara Hughes, was on hand to judge the winner along with market manager Will Fulford. More than 20 different designers showed their work, including Fairy Gothmother – who had giant full skirts and show-stopping feather fans and was the only designer to use ‘real’ women.
But behind all the fun was a serious message. In an evening aimed at promoting fair trade and ethical work practice, there was also another wrong to set to right. Councillor Theo Blackwell, viewing from the coveted front-row, took up the point: “Camden Town has this image of goth clothes and naff shirts- this night shows there is so much more vibrancy and creativity going on.”
