| Student faces jail over forged
passport |
A CHINESE law student made an extremely stupid mistake
when she used a false passport to try to sit an exam for a fellow
student, a court heard.
Yuan Yuan Sui, 27, was discovered using the fake document as she
tried to gain entry to an exam at the School of African and Oriental
Studies (Soas) in Bloomsbury in August this year.
She could now be jailed for nine months.
Appearing before Highbury Corner Magistrates Court on Friday,
Masters student Sui, who lives in Cartwright Gardens, Kings
Cross, wept in the dock as the facts of the case were read out.
Prosecuting, Margaret Adebiyi said: Police were called to
Soas by staff, who said she had submitted a false passport to gain
entry to an exam.
Officers felt the passport to be a forgery with what appeared
to be a photocopied stamp. She was asked to leave the exam.
In a police interview, Sui, who is in the UK on a one-year student
visa, made a full admission of her involvement in the scam.
She claimed a friend, who had once done her a favour, had asked
her to take the exam for another friend.
But, she said, she was unaware of the plan to use a false passport,
having only been given a package containing the papers just before
the exam.
Defending, Manjit Dogra said: Miss Sui accepts her actions
were extremely stupid. She had no intention of making financial
gains and did it to help someone.
Ms Dogra said it was in Suis nature to help people and she
was told the student had previously failed the same exam.
She was under the impression she would be given a real passport.
She said: She was in a state of confusion. She just simply
didnt realise what the consequences of her actions would be.
Sui, who was released on unconditional bail, will reappear at Highbury
Corner Magistrates Court on October 7 for pre-sentence reports. |
