| WARNING
ON BOOZE LAWS |
Pubs could close after failing to
apply for new licences
HUNDREDS of pubs, bars and restaurants could be operating illegally
by November unless City Hall changes its licensing policy.
This is the warning from licensing trade as more than 600 establishments
failed to apply for conversion licences under the controversial
new Licensing Act.
The West End Extra has learned that licensing chiefs met with council
lawyers yesterday (Thursday) to discuss amendments to their licensing
policy.
The deadline for conversion licences was August 6 and just over
600, out of 3,600 licensed premises, failed to meet the deadline.
They now have to apply for a completely new licence.
But Westminster Council fears that pubs which have been operating
for generations could be forced to close altogether as residents
might object to these applications.
In designated stress areas such as Soho the councils policy
is to refuse all new applications.
Venues have started to submit applications for new licences, including
champagne and oyster restaurant Randall and Aubin in Brewer Street,
Soho, and McDonalds Restaurant in Oxford Street. |
