THE Phoenix Palace now under the expert management
of Dee Tang used to be an Indian restaurant but over
the years they have been adding to its décor and now it
has lovely Chinese decorations throughout. The fish tank is a
great source of amusement to children and has moved several times
to make room for a sophisticated entrance where you are met and
taken to your table.
A small water fountain gives a good background for the smaller
tables for two near it and a large round one which sits 10 to
12. I have been with friends for lunch or dinner when we all share
the cost of the meal.
On occasions like this we choose a table in the mezzanine area
and our menu consists of the following depending on the number
of people in the party: Mixed Hors doeuvres fried
seaweed, smoked thin chicken pieces and spare ribs (£6.50)
or scallops (£3.80). Lamb wrapped in lettuce leaves (£9.80)
then Peking duck served with thin pancakes, spring onions and
strips of cucumbers (£30 for a whole duck, £16.00
for half and £9 for a quarter).
For the main course a delicious combination of the following is
really satisfying: Large Grilled Prawns and Garlic (£14.80),
Pork Slices in Black Bean Sauce (£5.80) Rice in Lotus Leaves
(£7.80). As for beverages the Jasmine tea is delicious at
£1.50.
When I go alone or with just one other person, I like to order
what most Chinese people eat in Hong Kong. A large bowl of noodles
with broth, vegetables, fish and/or meats.
You will find these under the heading of Noodles in Soup in the
menu and they vary in price from £5.80 to £7.80. They
are large enough for three to share or as with all the other dishes
you can ask to take the leftovers home if you have left
any!
The Phoenix Palace also has private rooms and has great following
from the Chinese community. Its very popular on Sundays
for dim sum reservations essential and during Chinese
New Year celebrations when they have fantastic dragon shows.
