MONTHS of waiting were over for thousands of Westminster pupils yesterday (Thursday) who finally collected their GCSE results.
Many had much to celebrate and there was a two per cent improvement overall on last year’s results, with 47 per cent of pupils in the top bracket, achieving five A* to C grades.
Council education boss Councillor Brian Connell said: “This is an improvement on last year and is testament to the hard work of schools, teachers and pupils in the borough. It’s an achievement that they deservedly should be very proud of.”
John Hunter, deputy headteacher of St Marylebone School where pupils did better than average said: “There has been an excellent performance all round with nearly all departments achieving 90 per cent A* to C passes. There are many, many happy pupils.
St Marylebone pupil Sana Razak who was top of the class with nine A* grades, said: “I am really pleased and relieved.”
Others turned up to collect their results en route to celebrate in the mud at the Reading music festival. Serena Nazareth said: “We all did really well and are off to Reading for a party to celebrate.”
North Westminster Community School head teacher Janet Morrison said: “We are delighted to see the wide range of subjects where students are gaining the highest grades possible. The governors and staff are committed to building on these results in the school’s final year, and passing on to the Academies a strong tradition of good, multicultural education where the students’ talents are supported to the full.”
Rachel Allard, head teacher of Grey Coat Hospital School in Victoria said: “I’m delighted with the result. This year the percentage five A* to C is 82 per cent. This achievement is very pleasing.”
Results at St Augustine’s CE School, Kilburn Park were slightly lower than last year but head Alex Thomas said: “Some individuals have done really well. Two girls, Pilar Abdel Rahman got ten passes including nine As and A*s and Ellahe-Naz Farhanghnia nine passes eight A*s and one A.”
At Westminster City School where there was an eight per cent rise in students earning five A* to C grades.
Deputy head Jim Wilson said: “The dramatic increase in our overall results are a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the staff and students.”
Pimlico School head teacher Philip Barnard said: “We are extremely pleased with these results and look forward to welcoming back many of these students to our highly successful Sixth Form.”
At time of press results were not available for Quintin Kynaston in St John’s Wood or St George’s RC School, Maida Vale.
