FACE CELL DEATH CHARGES |
SERIOUS concerns over safety in Camdens police cells have
been raised after the boroughs most decorated officer learned
he would be charged with covering up the death of a man at Holborn
police station.
Sergeant Matthew Walters, 35, who last year won three assistant
commissioners commendations more than any other officer
in Camden is accused of perverting the course of justice
and forgery following the death of 47-year-old Italian Enzo Stompanato
in December 2002.
A second officer, Constable Simon Jefferson, 27, faces charges of
manslaughter by gross negligence, perverting the course of justice
and forgery. |

EXAM RESULTS ON THE SLIDE |
THE trend towards improved GCSE results in Islington has stalled,
despite rising national scores, provisional figures released yesterday
(Thursday) reveal.
Only 44 per cent of pupils achieved five or more A* to C grades,
compared with the provisional figure of 45 per cent last year.
The national rise for students gaining A* to C grades this year
is two per cent.
But headteachers at schools including Islington Green and Highbury
Fields were celebrating some of the best A and A* grades ever.
Schools boss Bill Clark said last night that this years results
consolidated those of previous years. |

GUARDS TO TACKLE VICE |
A PRIVATE security firm has been hired to spy on pimps, prostitutes
and drug dealers by desperate residents who want to clean up their
area.
People living in Sussex Gardens, Bayswater, believe police are no
longer capable of dealing with the areas crime and resorted
to desperate measures.
The Quadrangle and Devonport residents associations are forking
out thousands of pounds to pay Gallowglass Security who are
regularly employed by television companies and party organisers
to patrol the area.
Residents have complained of noise, harassment from pimps, of prostitutes
having sex openly in the street and finding used condoms and needles
in their doorways. |
