Sybil’s flat in blaze drama

Fire guts one flat and damages others

Mr Holmes’s damaged flat

Cllr Sybil Shine

FIRE investigators are probing a blaze that caused more than £100,000 worth of damage at a house in Primrose Hill on Saturday.
The blaze ripped through the detached prestigious house in Regent’s Park Road, Primrose Hill, that has been converted into three flats. Nobody was inside the building during the blaze and no injuries were reported. It could, however, be several months before the house is completely repaired.
Labour councillor Sybil Shine’s flat was one of those damaged.
She was at her holiday home in France at the time of the fire but was relayed the bad news by friends. Cllr Shine said last night (Wednesday): “The information came through bit by bit. When you are told that your house is on fire, you get an iron ball screwed up in your stomach and you feel worried – but not about your possessions, about people that might be in the building. I’ve been told my flat is okay.”
Fire fighters were called after smoke was spotted by a passer-by billowing out of a first floor window.
The blaze began in a flat rented by Rupert Holmes, who yesterday (Wednesday) told of a moment of panic when his wife, Julia, thought their two children were inside the burning building.
The children were actually walking in nearby Regent’s Park with their nanny. Six fire-engines from Belsize station attended the blaze. It took fire-fighters two hours to bring the blaze under control.
